Seriously! You can use cupcake wrappers to texture your metal if you know what you are doing. There have been so many advances in technology that leads to new objects that can be used in a number of ways. One such product is the decorative cupcake wrapper. They are laser cut papers with a consistency of a mid weight card stock. And that means they are perfect for texturing metal in a rolling mill.
Watch this super short video to see how I use these decorative wrappers to impart a beautiful texture on my metal.

Where do you find these wrappers? Well, I found mine on Amazon as well as in the craft store. They are all the rage right now, so they aren’t too difficult. But I did go through a TON of listings and picked out about 16 of them and found the ones with the best prices.
I like using water color paper and this is the one I use:

Thanks for all your support and good luck on winning.
Melissa, why do you now use watercolor paper when roller printing, instead of wrapping items in paper towels, as in your previous video?
Good question. I still use the other from time to time. It just depends on my mood anymore. LOL. I am still experimenting to see where I get the best impression. Perhaps that is another video. 🙂
Loved these! Enjoy watching you work!
I love your videos; they are so informative and user friendly!
I would like to see a trouble shooting video on what can happen with soldering. I struggle with joins not holding… maybe the torch is too hot… or not hot enough? What is the secret trick to making those joins work?
Thanks!
Becky
Great video tute! I’m now a subscriber. 😉
I do have a question. When I was in small metals class they had us sandwich both sides of the piece – in other words not have the cupcake texture hitting the metal. The only thing I can think of is that they wanted us to do the same thing each time so that if we ever used something harder that could mar the wheels we wouldn’t. Does that sound right?
Yes, that does sound right. If I am working with harder materials, I will certainly sandwich it all. But paper isn’t going to do anything bad to my rollers.
Love, Love Love this idea! Thank you so much for all of your tips!
Q) What organizational tips do you have for someone that is creating their business and also has a FT-Job outside of the home??? How do you balance it all????
That is a great question. I will add this to my list of things to cover. I am really bad at balancing it all. 🙂
You make this look so simple! Does it matter which side of the wrapper you place next to the Metal?
It really wasn’t difficult. No, in this case it didn’t matter which side I used. If there were text or something, then it would, but not on this random pattern.
I love to use non-traditional or found objects when designing and making jewelry. I never would have thought to use cupcake wrappers. Are they made of a material that you can use with ink pad and to make a stamp for etching metal for those of us without a mill?
Hi Emily, They are made with a material similar to card stock. I am not sure how it would work with stamping and etching with it. That might be an interesting experiment.
Hi Melissa I saw your video on texturing with cupcake wrappers and using the rolling mill. I am a beginner. I’m wondering if you provide me a suggestion for a rolling mill brand, extra rollers?,amount,
And suggestions where to purchase? Thank you. Marianne
Hi Marianne,
When it comes to Rolling mills, I would certainly spend your money right the first time. Don’t bother with the cheapie ones. They are just a waste of time and money and will most likely be really frustrating. I love both my Durston and PepeTools mills. They have both been really great. You can’t beat the price of the Pepetools, especially if you are here in the states. you are not able to change out the rollers for either the pepe or Durston. Kevin Potter is working on a mill that will have changeable rollers. But it isn’t out and it won’t be cheap either. But it will be a great mill. If you are interested in a Pepe Mill, I can help you with that. You can order it through me. I can match almost any price out there on the Pepetools. Shoot me an email and we can discuss it further if you are interested.
Melissa, do you know if a chart available for cuff bracelet lengths?
Thanks,
Cindy
Hi Cindy, I am not aware of one. I will look around and see what I can find.
Thank you Melissa. I have been exploring metal and you make it easy to follow. I appreciate your videos
