August Synchroblog

What a busy few days it has been for me. This is the last week of summer before school starts. Sorry that I missed this week’s Tool Time Tuesday. But I had a really good reason. My oldest is away at girls camp for the week. As many of you might recall, we moved into our home nearly 5 months ago now. We had all sorts of plans of jumping in and getting the studio set up and the girls bedrooms all done and ready. Then came reality. We moved in and right away Riley’s bedroom was flooded….. just after I put in brand new carpet. *Sigh* So we pulled out part of the wall, repaired the damage in her room, repaired the roof where the leak was happening and thought we were good to go. Then…. the AC went out. So for all this time, the girls have been living out of their boxes and unorganized rooms. Riley’s bed was in the middle of the room and you could barely walk into her room. So on Tuesday, I got it into my head that it would be  really fun to have her come home to a finished bedroom. I painted ALL Freaking day on Tuesday (hence, no tool time tuesday.) I still have a few touches to put into the room and it will be done. She comes home tomorrow afternoon. I can’t wait to see her face.

Monday all the girls start back to school on Monday. Even my baby will be starting full time preschool/daycare. This will allow me to have the days to work on things and then be a mom in the afternoons when they all get home from school.

Speaking of school…. For the month of August, the Synchroblog post was to be based on a pinterest pin that inspired us. Kate has really long hair and she is a total “princess.” She loves it when I do fancy things to her hair. I found this cute pin at: http://www.princesshairstyles.com/2013/08/half-up-hairstyle-fairy-wings-braid.html and she wanted me to try it immediately. Now, keep in mind, that I did this quickly this morning and it was the first time we had tried it. So it will be nice when we get to school. But still, Kate is in love with it and loves me for doing fun things to her hair.

July Synchroblog – Morning Bird or Night Owl?

Which are you – a Morning Bird or a Night Owl?

Do you roll out of bed in the morning rip roaring and ready to go? Or do you stumble eyes shut to the coffee pot growling at anyone in your way?

Are you in bed before the sun goes down? Or do you burn the midnight oil?

If you asked me just a little more than three years ago, I wouldn’t even hesitate to tell you that i am a true night owl. However, since my pregnancy with my youngest, it seems to be a bit fuzzy. I remember in college I could easily pull all nighters studying for an exam or working on a large project or paper. Even after having my first three children I could easily work in the studio until 3 or 4 in the morning and still function the next day. But lately? Not so much.

Does that make me a morning person? GOOD HEAVEN’S NO! Even when I make it to bed at a decent hour (11:00 pm or midnight even) I am still a zombie in the morning. Just before leaving Washington, I was meeting a friend of mine at the gym at 5:30 am every day. It was so hard, but I loved it because it gave me a lot of really good energy for the rest of the day. Of course, I would be in bed by 9:30 or 10:00 pm. That is just unheard of for me. With school out for the summer, you will be hard pressed to find me out of bed earlier than 7:00 am, most days 8:00. LOL. I love that I don’t HAVE to go in to a full time job anymore. Of course, that opens a whole new can of worms for me.

I miss being able to stay awake at night. My most creative time tends to be between the hours of 9 pm and 4 am. Perhaps in the fall, when the kids return to school and Kiari starts full time pre-school, I will be able to get back into the schedule, or at least learn to be creative during the day light hours.

So what about you? Are you a Morning Person or a Night Owl?

June Synchroblog – Found on Pinterest

I love looking at ideas on Pinterest. I have to be careful though as sometimes it makes me feel worthless. There are so many good ideas and creative people out there. I have to be careful to not allow it to make me feel less than creative. I know you all think that I am this super creative person, but I am not. I have been ver fortunate to find that I have a natural talent for art jewelry making, but that is about the extent of it. I have a hard time decorating my house, coming up with cute gifts or anything creative in any other realm. Even jewelry making is extremely difficult for me. I can sit at my bench for hours upon hours and have nothing but crap to show for it. But every now and then, things click and they all fall into place. I wish that would happen a bit more often. Hopefully soon.

Another area that I am really awful is cooking. I am not good at it at all. And quite frankly, I don’t enjoy cooking. I would much rather do other things, like play in the studio and wait for fabulous ideas to come. Sigh, Such is life.

One of the things that I have enjoyed doing on Pinterest is looking at all the yummy things to eat. Pinterest is actually the reason that I asked for a crockpot for Christmas. I had been given one as a wedding gift, and I am pretty sure that in 15 years of marriage, it was used maybe 4 times. But then I started to see all these great things you could do with it. So just 2 months after I had given mine away, I asked my husband for one. The look on his face was priceless. HA!

One of our favorite recipes is Teriyaki Chicken. In fact, we had it last night. I meant to snap a photo of it, but we were running a bit late for dinner and everyone snatched it up quickly. The recipe I love to use is from http://lakelurecottagekitchen.com/2011/08/30/crock-pot-teriyaki-chicken/

Photo is from her website.
I make mine in a 6 qt slow cooker. It makes plenty. When it is just my family, we have enough left over for at least one more meal. But in the case of last night, we had only 3 extra people over and the bowl was left clean empty. I love that I just had to throw the items into the crock pot and I could leave to do all my other chores for the day and dinner was still nearly ready when it was time to eat.

May Synchroblog – Words Have Meaning

The Artists Synchroblog (May) – The Artists Synchroblog is a group of bloggers who post every other month on the same topic, sharing our experience or perspective. On alternate months we undertake a Pinterest Project where we each take inspiration from a pinterest picture, create something (art, a meal, a DIY project, etc) and then post about it.
I’m excited to have been accepted into The Artists Synchroblog group! May’s Synchroblog topic is “WORDS HAVE MEANING.” So we are all posting about words that have meaning to us. Maybe a favorite quote, some words of wisdom, a poem, something that speaks to you.
I honestly didn’t know what to do on this… and I am a bit late to boot. But I did finally come up with a quote that fit perfectly.
“Mistakes are what makes success.”
I have three young girls. And there is nothing like learning how to have successes after mistakes than by watching my children. Riley (my oldest) is learning to play percussion this year. She gets really frustrated after just a few minutes of playing and messing up. Kate is learning to read better, and nothing is more frustrating than navigating all the “rules” and “exceptions” of the English language. Kiari is learning everything. Perhaps her frustrations are the funniest to us as she throws the BEST two-year-old tantrums complete with screaming and stomping feet.
I have had many careers in my short 36 years of life, jewelry being my most passionate one and is fraught with successes and perceived failures. I say perceived because those failures really are what have lead me to the successes that I have had. I have learned from each of them, even if the lesson learned was nothing more than, “Go to bed when you are tired, because if you don’t, a meltdown is almost certain.”
What about you? What are some of your favorite phrases? Why do you like them? I would love to hear about it.
